How to Find the Right Keywords for Your Audience

The right keywords depend on who’s searching. Here’s how to figure out what your audience actually types into Google. 🎯

Start With Your Customers

Before you touch any keyword tool, answer these questions:

  • What problems do your customers have?
  • How do they describe those problems?
  • What questions do they ask before buying?
  • What words do they use – technical jargon or plain language?

Talk to your sales team. Read customer emails. Look at reviews. The language your customers use is the language you should target.

Use the Tools

Google Search Console: Shows what you’re already ranking for. Free and based on real data.

Google Ads Keyword Planner: Shows search volume estimates. Free with a Google Ads account.

Google Autocomplete: Start typing and see what Google suggests. These are real searches people make.

Third-party tools (Ahrefs, Semrush): More data, more features, but treat their estimates skeptically.

Match Keywords to Intent

Different demographics search differently:

  • Researchers: “What is…” “How does…” “Difference between…”
  • Comparers: “Best…” “Top…” “vs” “reviews”
  • Buyers: “Buy…” “Price…” “Near me” “Discount”

Know where your audience is in the buying journey, and target keywords that match that stage.
